Riwal had his phone to his ear as they stepped out onto the street. Dupin could hear him going through the new tasks with Nolwenn.

The car was right by the quay, just a few yards away from them. Dupin took a look around. There was a naval vessel in one of the berths. It was wedge-shaped, narrow, that distinctive pale gray, a small frigate or patrol boat. There was a large, empty area in front of the quay where he could make out three rusty rail-like contraptions running parallel along the concrete floor. There was a boat on the middle one, twenty meters long, Dupin guessed, a technical superstructure, some kind of utility boat. Beyond that he could see gigantic steel ramps leading into the sea. Apart from white, the brownish red of the rust was the dominant color here, and it was surprisingly bright in the sunlight. Opposite was a large concrete berth that marked the edge of the shipyard harbor. Right next to it, looking almost dainty: narrow wooden jetties for the pleasure boats. The Port de Plaisance in the front harbor had long been too small for all of the boats. So the town had opened more mooring spots for smaller sailing and motorboats in the large harbor around the Ville Close.

“That’s fine, yes. Great. Le Menn is to call me directly, yes…”

They had reached the car now and Riwal was still on the phone.

The unease Dupin had been feeling during the conversation they had just had was turning into serious frustration. The two events didn’t fit together properly, no matter how furiously his mind tried to make links between them; or at least he couldn’t see how they fit. There was Chaboseau’s murder and then there was the attack which had at least one—anonymous—confessor to it and now a possible motive too. But what good would that be if the two events just didn’t fit together? Had two crimes happened independently of each other? Two ongoing, unrelated matters? That overlapped through certain people “by total chance”? Extremely unlikely. But it was not out of the question. Anything was possible. One of Claire’s favorite sayings was you could have fleas and lice at the same time. A good doctor knew this, no matter how unlikely “common sense” might deem it, and this exact knowledge had saved countless lives. Claire could give plenty of specific examples. Were they dealing with one such example? Were fleas and lice both at play here?

Dupin started the engine. Riwal was still on the phone with Nolwenn.

The network of paths in this part of the harbor complex was like a labyrinth. It was particularly confusing because nothing was fenced in, all of the construction sites and complexes were openly accessible. You had to drive slowly, very slowly, and be incredibly careful. They went past another warship, this time in a dry dock. Dupin used his turn signal—only to brake hard a moment later and pull over.

He had thought about it on
